The core inputs and primary result are already above. Open these options only when you need a starting point.

Seal Selection Assistant

Not sure where to start?

Choose the application, duty and pressure context. DraftFit gives you O-ring cross-section starting points to evaluate — not an automatic ISO recommendation.

1. What are you sealing?
2. Is there relative motion?
3. Pressure context
4. Cross-section starting points to evaluateHardware: 40 mm

The assistant uses DraftFit heuristics to create a coherent starting geometry and run the checks. It does not replace controlled-standard selection, manufacturer catalog data or fluid-compatibility review.

Engineering Basis & Notes

References: ISO 3601-1:2012 (O-ring dimensions/tolerances), ISO 3601-2:2025 (general-application housings/glands), ISO 3601-4:2008 (anti-extrusion rings).

• DraftFit groove dimensions are internal engineering presets, not a reproduction of ISO tables. Production dimensions and tolerances must be checked against the applicable ISO 3601-1:2012 and ISO 3601-2:2025 requirements.

• Squeeze, stretch and gland fill should be verified at tolerance-stack extremes.

• Extrusion-risk evaluation is indicative and is not an ISO acceptance limit. Actual limits depend on pressure, clearance, hardness, temperature, compound and dynamic conditions.

• Chemical compatibility cannot be determined from NBR/FKM/EPDM family alone. The actual compound must be checked against the working fluid.

• Dynamic applications also require verification of velocity, lubrication, surface finish, wear, friction and stick-slip. If back-up rings are used, their final geometry should be checked separately against ISO 3601-4:2008 or manufacturer data.

Formulas & methodology

  • Squeeze (%) = cross-section compression / free cross-section × 100.
  • Gland fill (%) = O-ring cross-sectional area / effective groove area × 100.
  • Circumferential strain (%) is derived from the installed circumference relative to the free O-ring circumference.
  • Groove depth, width and root diameter are generated from seal type, duty, O-ring section and the implemented design rules.

Engineering basis & standards

  • O-ring sizing and terminology are aligned with the ISO 3601 family; the calculator uses implemented engineering rules rather than reproducing the complete standards.
  • Housing/gland dimensional guidance is referenced to ISO 3601-2 methodology, while O-ring sizes/material-related context is separated from the housing calculation.

Assumptions

  • The O-ring behaves as a conventional elastomeric seal and the selected material is compatible with the actual fluid and temperature range.
  • Hardware is sufficiently stiff and surface finish, lead-in geometry and tolerances are appropriate for the application.
  • Pressure and extrusion checks are preliminary and do not model transient pressure, rapid gas decompression or detailed elastomer nonlinear behavior.

Warnings / limits

  • Confirm chemical compatibility, temperature capability, surface finish and extrusion-gap requirements with the seal/material supplier.
  • Dynamic seals require additional review of lubrication, speed, friction, wear and heat generation.
